Peeling baseboard paint is very annoying and completely damages the baseboard look. Maybe you are wondering why baseboard paint is peeling and how to fix it.

Baseboard paint is peeling for 2 main reasons. The primer is not bonding in the basement properly, or before it is completely cured, you apply paint on it. To fix the issues, you should sand old paint and primer, then apply a good bonding primer and solve the curing issue. And the final step is to apply paint.

In this article, I will explain the reasons for baseboard paint peeling, how to fix it, and how to protect it for long-lasting.

What is the reason for the baseboard paint peeling?

There are some major reasons which are responsible for baseboard peeling.

Prime problem

It is the main reason for paint peeling. If primer is not properly bound with the baseboard, The primer very soon peels off with paint.

Old paint or oil paint

It would be best if you did not paint on old paint surfaces because there is a high chance the surface is not ready for paint, and the paint can peel off.
Also, an oil paint surface is not ready for latex or acrylic-based paint. So if the paint is used, it will be off very soon.

Getting old

Paint can not stick for a lifetime. A specific time later, paint starts destruction. Peeling paint is one part of the destruction.

How to fix baseboard peeling

If the baseboard paint starts peeling, you can not fix it by painting a new coat on it. And If you paint a new coat on it, the paint will peel off again.
So what should you do? You should completely remove the peeling paint and primer layer and again prime and paint new coats on it. I will describe how to prepare the surface and paint it on the surface.

You need some important material

  1. 120 grit sandpaper
  2. Scraper
  3. Sand Paper
  4. Paintbrush
  5. Primer
  6. Latex or acrylic-based paint

Step 1. Prepare surface

You must need to remove the peeling paint. Take a scraper and scrape the paint. After scraping, take a 120 grit sandpaper, remove the paint, and make the surface smooth. After sand and clean dust, you can rubbed down with denatured alcohol as a finishing touch.

Step 2. Prime the surface

It would help if you chose primer, which has good bonding ability. If the primer is not bound properly, the paint and primer will again peel off. It is a recommended primer for this type of project. Take a paintbrush and apply the primer to the baseboard on all surfaces. Then give it time to dry. You can use a 2ed coat of primer if you do not feel satisfied. But it is optional.

Step 3. Start Painting

Take latex-based paint and apply it to the prime surface. After finishing the painting, wait for it to dry. You can apply a second layer coat as an optional. This coat makes the paint brighter.

Note: Take a 2-inch best-quality paintbrush. If the paintbrush loose hair while painting, it will ruin the work of the baseboard.

Should I strip baseboard paint or sand it?

In a small area, it can give good results. However, striping is a chemical process, it smells bad, it is a toxic chemical, and it is a slow process. On the other side, sanding is environment friendly, has no toxic chemical use, has extended area coverage, low cost, etc.

For cleaning baseboard, paint strips and sand both work. But sanding is recommended.

How to protect baseboard paint for long-lasting

After applying paint on the baseboard properly, you do not need so much protection. However, you can do something in advance.

Use Premium Paint

Premium paint comes with an advanced sealer. This type of paint is not only bright as well as also long-lasting. So to make paint permanent, you should use premium paint.

Sealer

You can use any type of sealer on the paint. Sealers create an advanced protective layer on the paint. So your paint is always locked against wet weather, insects, climate, etc.
However, a good paint built-in sealer. So apply a good paint, there is no need to think about sealer.

Baseboard paint maintenance is not needed regularly. You can do it for 4-5 consecutive years. If the paint is affected by mold and mildew, you should take the necessary step to protect the baseboard paint.
