5 Reasons For Joint Compounds Not Sticking To Drywall [Fixed]

The Joint compound should stick to the drywall easily. If it’s not happened, there have any problem.

Some common reasons are the main causes for joint compounds not sticking well. If mud is old, bad addition ability, band tape not properly, mixing ratio not okay, and some more reason is cause for this issue.

Five common reasons for joint compounds not sticking to drywall and how to fix it?

If the joint compound does not stick properly, it can be fixable. So no need to worry.

Some mud has bad addison ability

It is one of the big reasons for joint compounds not sticking. 

In the market, there are a lot of types and brand compounds. Their prices also have differences. With this difference, it also has a different addison ability. 

So maybe, for this reason, the compound does not go with your drywall. 

So now what should you do?

There has a good solution. You can use drywall mud glue to add more addison ability to your joint compound mud.

Mud is old

Every premixed compound and the dry compound has expired time. 

Manufacturers give a time for how long the product is least, and after opening the cap and mixing the compound, how long it will be okay. 

You may expire the time of use of the product, so the product is not working.

For using old mud, you should not use any tricks. Because We mudding drywall to make it long-lasting. And this type of mud doesn’t give us a guarantee of long-lasting.

If the mud expires manufacturer recommends time. Don’t use it and choose a new one.

Not good band paper tape

If it does not show band paper tape properly on drywall, the tape will peel off. On this surface, the mud cannot stick correctly.

So how can you fix it?

You can use drywall mud glue in your compound. And it will make your mud more strong to stick on the surface.

Your surface is not ready

It is a very important factor, and you should check it first.

Join compounds need a clear surface for the stick but imagine your wall is past painted or there is a lot of dust or other waste on the drywall. So how can it stick there?

So before applying the joint compound, clean the wall properly. If it is past painted, take sandpaper and clean all painted dust properly.

Then apply the joint compound. I hope there is no issue.

Mixing water ratio is not right

Proper water ratio is a pretty important factor for sticking. Mud should not be too watery and tough.

What is the best water ratio with drywall compound?

Generally for 1 kg joint compound needs 200ml of water. But if the joint compound is premixed, it depends on the thickness of the mud compound.

But you can follow one trick for making the mud with the right thickness.

Take the compound in a bucket. Then every time put a little water in the compound. Then mix it with your hand or drill. Until the right thickness, repeats the process. 

And if you think the mud is too watery, put more compound in the bucket to fix the issue.
