If the paint is not completely washed out of the fabric, it can leave behind a permanent stain. To remove the paint, you should use turpentine or solvent to soften the paint. These are harsh chemicals that can affect the cloth.

How to remove water mixable oil paint from clothes?

There are two types of paint to remove.

  1. Wet paint
  2. Dry paint 

Wet paint can easily be removed with water and soap/detergent. 

Dry paint is not easy to remove. To remove the paint, you must scrape off the paint with a spoon or knife as much as possible. It will make it easier to soften the paint. After scraping the paint, you can follow any method below. 

There are some good and easy methods. The short overview:

Use laundry detergent: Put 2-3 tablespoons of detergent in a bucket. Sock 30 minutes. Then gently rub the cloth with a soft brush to loosen the paint. Then rinse the fabric in cold water. Repeat the process until remove paint properly.

Use a dish soap solution: Mix 1 cup of cold water with 2-3 drops of mild dish soap. Apply the solution to the stain and wash the cloth as usual.

Use distilled white vinegar:

  1. Shake a vinegar solution in a sprayer and apply it to the stained area.
  2. Wait 20 minutes and wash the apparel in the washing machine.
  3. Repeat if the stain remains.

Use paint thinner or turpentine (If you mix the paint with traditional oil or a similar medium): Apply paint thinner or turpentine directly to the stain.

Use denatured alcohol: Soak a clean cloth in a mixture of denatured alcohol and water and rub the stain with the cloth.

You need

How to do it? 

1. Scrape, then remove dry paint as much as possible.

2. Place the stained clothing item in a sink or bucket filled with cold water.

3. Add 2-3 tablespoons of laundry detergent to the water and mix it in.

4. Soak the stained clothing item in the detergent and water solution for 30 minutes.

5. Use a clothes brush to scrub the detergent into the stain, focusing on moving back and forth over the dried paint to get the bristles deep into the blemish

6. Rinse the stained area with cold water.

How to do it?

  1. Mix 1 cup of cold water in a bowl with 2-3 drops of mild dish soap.
  2. Using a clean cloth, apply the dish soap to the stain on the fabric.
  3. Gently rub the stained area to agitate the solution and help remove the stain.
  4. Wash the cloth as you normally would, either by hand or in a washing machine.
  5. After washing, check the cloth to see if the stain has been removed. Suppose it hasn’t; repeat the process until the stain is removed.

How to remove water mixable oil paint from clothes with distilled white vinegar

Materials need

  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Sprayer
  • Detergent

How to apply?

1. Scrape, then remove dry paint as much as possible.

2. mix 2 cups white vinegar with water

3. Pure it in the sprayer

4. Place the cloth on a flat surface.

5. Spray property the paint surface (to soften the paint)

6. Allow the vinegar to sit for 15-20 minutes.

7. Rub the stained area with a laundry brush.

8. Rinse the cloth with cold water.

9. Repeat steps 3-6 until the paint is removed.

10. Wash the cloth in a washing machine with detergent.

How to remove water mixable oil paint from clothes with paint thinner or turpentine

This is a harsh method. If the paint did not come off with the dish soap or detergent. You can try this technique.

You need 

  • Paint thinner

How to apply

  1. Test on a small area. If it damages the cloth, avoid the technique.
  2. Scrape, then remove dry paint as much as possible.
  3. Soak the affected area with a small amount of paint thinner. It will loosen the paint.
  4. Then wash the clothes with warm water.
  5. Apply detergent solution
  6. A final wash in the washing machine. 

Can water soluble oil paint stains be removed from delicate fabrics like silk or wool?

Silk and wool are very soft fabrics, you can apply hair shampoo, soft detergent, or soap for stubborn paint. Most of the paint will be removed. 

If the paint is dry, scrap as much paint as possible. Then mix one tablespoon of detergent and a cap of water. Dip the cloth for 30 minutes and then gently wash the cloth.

Don’t apply solvent; it will damage the fabric.

Is water soluble oil paint easier to remove than traditional oil paint?

The water stable paint pigment is formulated with a water stable blinder, which is easy to clean with water and soap. On the other hand, traditional oil paint combines with oil or resins. We know oil can not be cleaned by water. It needs more harsh chemicals for clean up like turpentine and solvent.
